If the company wishes to go forward with a RIF that affects members of the union, they must negotiate the terms with the union. Contrast this with the current situation: The company can decide now, on a whim, to lay off employees. There is no prescribed process, no explanation necessary, and no protection afforded to any engineer. The minute that the engineers form a union, the company must bargain fairly with the employees’ union and can no longer make unilateral decisions.
